- 3M introduced Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid in 2004 as a next-generation halon replacement. It is based on a proprietary chemistry from 3M called a fluoroketone, specifically dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one, and is designated as FK-5-1-12 in NFPA and ISO 14520 clean agent standards.
