- Wärtsilä's open-loop scrubber system has a heritage dating back to 2010, when the first commercial order for a Wärtsilä (formerly Hamworthy Krystallon) open-loop scrubber unit was placed. It was installed on the RoRo vessel Linea Messina in 2011.
- Within Wärtsilä's exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) portfolio, the Open Loop scrubber is one of three main types, alongside Closed Loop and Hybrid systems. The Open Loop system is designed for vessels operating in areas with sufficient seawater alkalinity and no discharge restrictions, while the Closed Loop is for low alkalinity waters or zero-discharge zones, and the Hybrid offers flexibility for all water types.
- The Wärtsilä Open Loop Scrubber system is chosen for its ability to utilize the natural alkalinity of seawater to neutralize sulfuric acid formed during SOx removal, eliminating the need for chemical additives. This system offers an economical and environmentally friendly solution for meeting IMO 2020 and other SOx emission regulations.
