- Wärtsilä has been developing exhaust gas cleaning systems for decades, with their open-loop scrubber systems benefiting from Hamworthy's 50 years of expertise. The first commercial operation of a Wärtsilä (then Hamworthy Krystallon) open-loop scrubber was in 2011 on the RoRo vessel Linea Messina. Wärtsilä's hybrid scrubber systems were being retrofitted on vessels as early as the first quarter of 2013.
- Wärtsilä offers a range of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), including open-loop, closed-loop, and hybrid configurations. The Hybrid Ready (Scrubber EGCS) sits as the most versatile option, combining the benefits of both open and closed-loop systems.
- The Hybrid Ready scrubber offers operational flexibility, allowing vessels to switch between open-loop mode (using seawater) in open waters and closed-loop mode (using caustic soda) in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) or ports where discharge is restricted. This system is also designed with a modular approach for future upgrades, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) readiness.
