- The Furuno DS-80 Doppler Speed Log was introduced around 2000, with its operator's manual dated February 2000. It was designed as a Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment (SDME) utilizing the Doppler Effect principle.
- The DS-80 is an earlier model in Furuno's Doppler Speed Log lineup, preceding the DS-85 and the multi-axis DS-60 Doppler Sonar. Its transducer was designed with the same dimensions as the earlier DS-70 transducer, allowing for direct hull fitting or with a gate valve.
- The DS-80 is chosen for its high accuracy in measuring speed through water and distance run, even at very slow speeds and in rough conditions, thanks to its 1 MHz paired-beam Doppler effect system. It also offers automatic velocity correction for water temperature changes and can output speed data to various other navigation systems.
