- The VTR series of turbochargers was introduced in 1945 by Brown Boveri & Co (BBC), the predecessor to Accelleron, following a surge in demand for turbocharged engines after World War II. The VTR..0, launched in 1945, featured an open radial-flow compressor, a pressure ratio of 2.0, a light rotor, and a self-lubricating system.
- The VTR series is a predecessor to Accelleron's TPL generation of turbochargers. Within the VTR series, the VTR 160 is designed for a lower engine output range compared to larger models like the VTR 200, VTR 250, and VTR 320.
- The VTR 160 is known for its proven reliability and robust performance, particularly in heavy-duty applications such as marine propulsion engines, especially at part load, and in stationary power plants. Its design with easily accessible external bearings simplifies and speeds up servicing, as bearings can be removed without dismantling the compressor wheel or air and gas pipes.
