- The Caterpillar C18 marine auxiliary engine was introduced in 2002, with orders available in September and first deliveries in November of that year. It was developed to offer higher power than its predecessor, the 3406E engine.
- The C18 auxiliary engine sits in the middle-to-upper range of Caterpillar's marine auxiliary engine offerings, above models like the C4.4, C7.1, and C9.3, but below the larger C32, C280, and 3500 series engines.
- The C18 is chosen for its durability and reliability in demanding marine and industrial applications, offering continuous duty operation without excessive wear. Its separate circuit aftercooling system (SCAC) reduces aftercooler corrosion by not circulating seawater through it.
