- The MTU Series 4000 diesel engine was launched at the SMM shipping show in Hamburg in October 1996, developed jointly by MTU Friedrichshafen and Detroit Diesel Corporation. A gas-powered version of the Series 4000 was introduced in 1999 for stationary power generation, and later debuted in mobile marine applications in July 2020.
- The Series 4000 is positioned as a high-performance, heavy-duty engine within MTU's range, offering a power output between 746 and 4,300 kW (1,000 to 5,766 bhp). It sits above the Series 2000, which is MTU's best-selling series with over 65,000 engines delivered, and below the more powerful Series 8000, which has a power range of 7,280 to 10,000 kW.
- The Series 4000 is known for its high power density, compact structure, and excellent reliability, making it suitable for high-speed vessels and various other demanding applications. It was also the first of its kind to feature common-rail injection as standard, contributing to low fuel consumption, reduced soot at low engine speeds, and low emissions.
