- The MTU Series 2000, alongside the Series 4000, was launched by MTU Friedrichshafen at the SMM shipping show in Hamburg in October 1996. These engines were designed to be technology leaders in off-highway power.
- The Series 2000 is MTU's best-selling series, offering a power spectrum ranging from 720 to 1,939 kW (966 – 2,600 bhp), making it suitable for applications requiring lower power ratings compared to its larger sibling. The Series 4000, in contrast, provides higher power outputs from 720 to 4,300 kW (1000 – 4828 bhp) and is designed for more demanding applications.
- The MTU Series 2000 is often chosen for its excellent fuel efficiency, compact design, and lower maintenance costs, making it well-suited for smaller commercial vessels, patrol boats, and ferries. It is also recognized for its reliability in medium power applications and its impressive acceleration capabilities in yacht versions.
