The Wärtsilä W14 high-speed engine was officially launched in November 2018, a result of collaboration between Wärtsilä and Liebherr. It is derived from Liebherr's D96 engine family. The W14 continues a legacy of Wärtsilä's engine development, with the original Wärtsilä Vasa 14 being the company's first diesel engine, started in June 1959.
The Wärtsilä W14 is positioned to complement Wärtsilä's portfolio in the high-speed engine segment, particularly in the power band around 1 MW, where Wärtsilä previously focused more on medium-speed engines like the Wärtsilä 20. It is designed to be the most compact marine engine in its power range.
The W14 is chosen for its compact design, high power density, and compliance with stringent emission regulations (IMO Tier III and optional EU Stage V). Its optimal power-to-weight ratio and low fuel consumption across a wide load range make it suitable for applications with limited space and weight requirements, such as tugboats, fishing vessels, ferries, and auxiliary gensets.
