The Wärtsilä W20 engine was introduced in 1992 as a heavy-duty diesel engine designed for economical and reliable operation on heavy fuel oil. Over 7,500 Wärtsilä 20 engines have been delivered since its launch.
The Wärtsilä 20 is positioned at the smaller end of Wärtsilä's medium-speed marine engine range, covering the lower power range within the Wärtsilä diesel engine family. It is a compact and lightweight engine, often used for auxiliary power generation and diesel-electric propulsion.
The Wärtsilä W20 is chosen for its proven robustness, reliability, and fuel flexibility, capable of running on marine diesel oil (MDO) or heavy fuel oil (HFO) and switching between them without power interruption. It offers long overhaul intervals and a maintenance-friendly design, contributing to low lifecycle costs.
