• The Wärtsilä 20 engine series, from which the W8L20 is derived, was introduced to the market in the early 1990s, with over 6,000 engines delivered since its launch in 1992. An upgraded version of the Wärtsilä 20, offering increased power output, was announced in December 2017.
• The Wärtsilä W8L20 is an eight-cylinder in-line engine within the Wärtsilä 20 series, which covers the lower power range of Wärtsilä's diesel engine family. It sits alongside other cylinder configurations such as 4L, 6L, and 9L within the same series.
