- The Wärtsilä 50DF engine series, from which the W6L50DF is derived, was first introduced in the early 2000s, with factory acceptance tests for the first W6L50DF engines completed in early 2003. This dual-fuel technology was developed from Wärtsilä's successful type 46 diesel engines.
- The W6L50DF is an in-line 6-cylinder model within the Wärtsilä 50DF family, which also includes in-line 8 and 9-cylinder configurations, as well as V-form engines with 12, 16, and 18 cylinders.
- The W6L50DF is chosen for its fuel flexibility, allowing seamless switching between natural gas, light fuel oil (LFO), or heavy fuel oil (HFO) during operation without power loss. Its lean-burn principle contributes to significantly lower NOx emissions in gas mode, meeting stringent environmental regulations.
