- The Wärtsilä 50DF engine series, from which the W8L50DF is derived, was first introduced for marine applications in 2002, with factory acceptance tests completed in January 2003 for its first installation on an LNG carrier. This dual-fuel technology itself was initially developed by Wärtsilä in the early 1990s for land-based power plants.
- The W8L50DF is an in-line 8-cylinder configuration within the Wärtsilä 50DF engine family, which offers a range of cylinder configurations from 6-cylinder in-line up to 18-cylinder V-form engines.
