- The Wärtsilä Sulzer RTA60C was launched by Wärtsilä NSD at the NorShipping exhibition in Oslo in July 1999. It was designed to offer cleaner, more efficient power in a smaller and lighter package.
- The RTA60C is part of the Sulzer RTA-series, which includes engines with varying stroke/bore ratios. It sits within the RTA-C line, characterized by stroke/bore ratios of less than 3.0, distinguishing it from the RTA-U (around 3.5) and RTA-T (around 4.0) lines. The RTA60C's compact dimensions were achieved through similar design principles proven successful in the RTA48T and RTA58T engines.
- The RTA60C was designed for "faster" ship applications such as medium-sized containerships, car carriers, RoRo vessels, and reefers, requiring power outputs up to 18,880 kW. A key strength is its compact design, with the six-cylinder version being only 7,620 mm long. It also incorporates features for enhanced performance and longevity, including low piston crown temperatures, durable cylinder liners, and anti-polishing rings for improved piston ring performance.
