The Wärtsilä Sulzer RT-flex58T-B is part of the RT-flex series, which introduced electronically-controlled common-rail fuel injection to low-speed marine diesel engines. The first series-built 6RT-flex58T-B engine passed its official shop test in January 2001 and entered service in September 2001 aboard the bulk carrier 'Gypsum Centennial'.
The RT-flex58T-B is a mid-range model within the Wärtsilä Sulzer RT-flex series, which includes engines with cylinder bores from 500mm to 960mm. It is based on the existing RTA58T-B engine type, but with the integration of the RT-flex common-rail system.
