The Wärtsilä Sulzer RT-flex58T-B is part of the RT-flex series, which introduced electronically-controlled common-rail fuel injection to low-speed marine diesel engines. The first series-built 6RT-flex58T-B engine passed its official shop test in January 2001 and entered service in September 2001 aboard the bulk carrier 'Gypsum Centennial'.
The RT-flex58T-B is a mid-range model within the Wärtsilä Sulzer RT-flex series, which includes engines with cylinder bores from 500mm to 960mm. It is based on the existing RTA58T-B engine type, but with the integration of the RT-flex common-rail system.
This model is chosen for its electronically-controlled common-rail system, which allows for flexible fuel injection and exhaust valve actuation, leading to benefits such as smokeless operation at all speeds, lower fuel consumption at part load, reduced maintenance, and stable running at very low revolutions.
