The Wärtsilä RT-flex82T, a low-speed marine diesel engine, was introduced in November 2005, with the first engines expected to be completed by the end of 2007. It is part of the broader RT-flex series, which began with the first engine entering service in September 2001.
The RT-flex82T is part of Wärtsilä's 820 mm-bore engine family, designed alongside the RT-flex82C. While the RT-flex82C is intended for Panamax containerships, the RT-flex82T is specifically designed for large tankers, including VLCCs and ULCCs.
This model is chosen for its electronically controlled common-rail fuel injection technology, which provides superior fuel efficiency across the entire operating range, reduced emissions, and smokeless operation even at low loads. Its high stroke-to-bore ratio and common-rail system allow for optimized fuel consumption in all operational conditions, particularly for VLCCs.
