The UEC52LA is part of the LA series, with the first 6UEC52LA engine built in May 1985. This series was designed to build upon the advantageous features of the earlier L series while maintaining interchangeability of main parts.
The UEC52LA is a medium-bore engine within J-ENG's offerings, positioned alongside other LA series models like the UEC60LA (larger bore) and UEC45LA (smaller bore). The LA series itself was succeeded by more advanced series such as the LSII and LSE, which offer improved performance and environmental compliance.
The UEC52LA was highly regarded for its reliability and low fuel oil consumption, making it a popular choice as the main engine for 30k to 40k DWT class bulk carriers. Its design focused on lower fuel consumption, a longer piston stroke, and lower engine speed to contribute to higher propulsion efficiency and overall economy.
