The MAN B&W ME-C series, which includes the S70ME-C, was introduced around 2001, building upon the electronically-actuated engine technology that MAN B&W began developing in 1991.
The S70ME-C is part of MAN B&W's S-type (long stroke) engine series, which traditionally has been favored by bulk carriers and tankers due to their lower speeds. Within the ME-C family, it is a compact, electronically controlled engine, offering advancements over the earlier ME-B series by having both fuel injection and exhaust valve actuation electronically controlled.
The S70ME-C is chosen for its superior performance parameters, compactness, and fully integrated electronic control, which allows for precise fuel injection pressure and rate shaping at any load. This electronic control also contributes to improved emission characteristics, smokeless operation, and lower NOx on command.
