The MAN B&W ME-GI (Gas Injection) engine was first presented in May 2011, building upon the company's prototype MC-GI dual-fuel engine developed in the 1990s. The ME-GI Mk. 2 platform, an upgraded version, was launched in 2020.
The ME-GI is a dual-fuel variant within MAN B&W's two-stroke engine portfolio, designed to operate on both conventional fuel oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) or methane. It sits alongside other dual-fuel engines like the ME-GIE (ethane) and ME-LGIM (methanol), as well as the electronically controlled ME-C single-fuel engines.
The ME-GI engine is chosen for its high fuel efficiency and exceptionally low methane slip emissions, making it a future-proof solution for LNG/methane-powered vessels. It offers flexible operation with various fuels and minimizes operating costs due to its industry-leading thermal efficiency.
