Description
Low-friction SPC antifouling predecessor to A-LF-Sea — proven fleet fuel savings
Did you know
- Nippon Paint Marine introduced LF-Sea in 2008, building upon its heritage of developing marine coatings since 1881 and pioneering tin-free antifouling paints in 1990. This product incorporated the company's proprietary HydroSmoothXT™ technology.
- LF-Sea is part of Nippon Paint Marine's fuel-saving antifouling series, which also includes the more advanced A-LF-Sea, launched in 2013, and the next-generation FASTAR series, introduced in 2021. A-LF-Sea is an enhanced version of LF-Sea, offering further propulsion benefits and improved water trapping technology.
- LF-Sea's primary strength lies in its patented 'water trapping' hydrogel technology, inspired by the skin structure of tuna fish, which reduces water flow resistance and can lead to significant fuel savings of around 10%. It also offers cost-effective application, as it can be applied directly over existing antifouling without full blasting.
| Model | Launch Year | Fuel Saving (compared to SPC A/F) | Key Technology | Typical Dry Film Thickness (μm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LF-Sea | 2008 | Around 10% | Water Trapping Technology (Hydrogel) | 80 ~ 150 (LF-Sea 600 HyB) |
| A-LF-Sea | 2013 | Around 10% (with enhanced hydro-gel and Rheology Control) | Enhanced Water Trapping Technology (Hydrogel) & Rheology Control | 80 ~ 150 (A-LF-Sea 150) |
| FASTAR I | 2021 | Up to 8% (proven) | Hydrophilic/hydrophobic nano-domain technology | 260 (vertical sides), 160 (flat bottom) for 60 months service on containership |
