The Sigma Coatings brand, under which Sigmadur 550 is sold, originated from the merger of three companies in 1972, with its heritage tracing back to 1722 in the Netherlands. PPG acquired SigmaKalon (which included Sigma Coatings) in 2008.
The Sigmadur 550 is a two-component, high-gloss aliphatic acrylic polyurethane finish within PPG's Sigmadur range, which also includes semi-gloss and high-build options like Sigmadur 520 and Sigmadur 550H, as well as a one-pack urethane polyester finish for maintenance, Sigmadur One.
Sigmadur 550 is chosen for its excellent color and gloss retention, even after prolonged atmospheric exposure, and its resistance to various oils and mild chemicals. It is also notable for its ability to cure at temperatures as low as -5°C (23°F) and its unlimited recoatability.
